A democratic republic is, strictly speaking, a country that is both a republic and a democracy. A democracy is one where the government is directly chosen by the people. A Republic is one where government authority is derived through the will of the people. Therefore, a Democratic Republic would be one where ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens. The government itself is run through elected officials. A monarch is not the head of state.
